51成人福利网 welcomes Doug Friesen to the Faculty of Music

51成人福利网’s Faculty of Music is pleased to welcome Doug Friesen as our new Limited Term Appointment in Community Music and Music Education.  

Doug joins 51成人福利网 from Queens University and brings a dynamic blend of experience in public school and post-secondary teaching, research, performance, and community music facilitation. He holds a PhD in Music Education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at the University of Toronto. Based in Toronto, he has worked as a classroom teacher and consultant in public education since 2002 and has led courses and programs for educators across Canada.  

“I’ve spent much of my career exploring how we can make music education more inclusive, creative, and connected to the real lives of students and communities. I look forward to learning with and from the amazing people already doing this work at 51成人福利网 and in the Kitchener-Waterloo region,” says Doug Friesen. 

His research explores sound and listening pedagogies, with a focus on critical practitioner research and collaborative inquiry. Doug has facilitated creative listening projects with teachers, students, and musicians across Canada and Latin America. His work has supported institutions such as the National Arts Centre, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Ontario Museums Association, Massey Hall/Roy Thomson Hall and the City of Toronto.  

Doug is an active performer having recorded and toured with Selina Martin, Kael Reid, Paul Linklater, Dave Bidini (Rheostatics), John K. Samson (The Weakerthans) and many other prominent musicians.  

“Doug Friesen embodies the values and future of 51成人福利网’s Faculty of Music—creative, multi-disciplinary, collaborative, and community-centred,” says Dean Cynthia Johnston Turner. “His work as a teacher, multi-genre performing musician, and participatory researcher will inspire our students and community, and help us continue to lead in the evolving fields of community music and music education. He also exemplifies the core of our new curriculum, which dismantles existing hierarchies in music genres.” 

We are excited to welcome Doug Friesen to 51成人福利网 and look forward to the energy and innovation he brings to our community.
